Our Setting

Hospital-based.
Not clinic-based.

Byron Williams Biokinetics operates from Netcare Milpark Hospital in Parktown, Johannesburg — one of South Africa's leading private hospitals. This isn't just an address. It's a reflection of the clinical complexity of the patients we serve.

Working within a hospital environment means direct lines of communication with cardiologists, pulmonologists, transplant teams, and other specialists. For patients managing serious cardiac or pulmonary conditions, that proximity matters.

Specialist referral network

Direct relationships with cardiologists, pulmonologists, and transplant surgeons at Milpark. Coordinated care, not isolated treatment.

Clinical-grade facilities

Exercise rehabilitation performed in a hospital-grade environment, with access to monitoring equipment appropriate for complex cardiopulmonary cases.

Medical aid acceptance

Registered with all major South African medical aids as a clinical medical service. We charge at medical aid rates.

Practice Founder

Byron Williams

BSc. Honours Biokinetics — University of Stellenbosch

Byron has a special interest in respiratory and cardiac rehabilitation, with extensive experience treating patients with Cystic Fibrosis and other chronic diseases affecting the heart and lungs. He has worked closely with patients on organ transplant waiting lists — preparing them physiologically for surgery — as well as post-transplant patients beginning rehabilitation for their second chance at life. An advocate of exercise as medicine for all patients regardless of limitation or disability.

Biokineticist

James Attwell

BA Honours Biokinetics — University of Johannesburg (2016)

James completed his internship at a practice specialising in neurological and orthopaedic conditions, developing expertise across a wide range of disorders. His experience extends to cardiovascular rehabilitation and sporting injuries. A former competitive swimmer and cricketer, his passion for biokinetics grew from sport and rehabilitation. His commitment is helping people live healthier and better lives.

Specialisation · Cardiopulmonary

Pre and post-transplant rehabilitation. Cystic Fibrosis. Cardiac rehab. Pulmonary disease.

Most biokineticists in Johannesburg are generalists. Byron Williams is not. His practice was built specifically around the patients that cardiac and pulmonary medicine refer to — those living with the most serious and complex chronic conditions.

For patients awaiting organ transplants, the pre-transplant period is critical — and exercise is one of the most evidence-backed interventions for improving surgical outcomes. Byron has worked with patients through this process, from waiting list to transplant to recovery. This is rare clinical experience in a biokineticist.

Cystic Fibrosis experience

Specialist exercise programming for CF patients during hospital admissions and ongoing management.

Organ transplant rehabilitation

Pre-transplant conditioning and post-transplant recovery — both sides of the most complex surgical event a patient experiences.

COPD, pulmonary fibrosis & asthma

Pulmonary rehabilitation using evidence-based exercise programming for chronic respiratory disease.

Cardiac conditions

Heart failure, post-MI rehabilitation, cardiomyopathy — structured exercise medicine for the compromised cardiovascular system.

Why Exercise Matters in Serious Disease

  • Exercise pre-transplant improves surgical outcomes and recovery time
  • Regular exercise reduces Cystic Fibrosis exacerbations and hospitalisations
  • Cardiac rehabilitation reduces mortality and readmission rates by up to 30%
  • Pulmonary rehab is one of the most effective interventions for COPD

Patient Testimonials

Real patients. Real results.

Living with Cystic Fibrosis I get admitted yearly 3-4 times. Exercising with Byron always helps while I'm admitted, lots of energy afterwards and also a great workout!
